Another Violent Dream | The Song

A musical accompaniment to the short story
9

This is a song I wrote based on the story ‘Another Violent Dream”. The story and song were written over 20 years ago, the song is included on my debut ‘Dead Air Animal’ album from 2001.

I thought this might be an interesting comparison between the original short story and how it was transformed into song lyrics.

Lyrics:

Violent dream, dressed in red

and the blood runs through my head

Raging bull at the gate

Poised to seal human fate

The bull, full of ancient wisdom and animal grace, snorts out a thick cloud of black smoke that smells of burning embers, he races down upon me like an avalanche and I turn and run. . .

Charging down on me

A thousand pounds breakneck speed

and the crowd cheers him on

without hope fear is gone

So I rise, broken bones

shake the pain, hear the drone

of the crowd as they cheer my salute

death so near

I raise myself up on two broken but defiant legs and I salute the crowd like some insane toreador. They know I am mad and they also know it is the only way. I smile big and wide, Hollywood movie smile, blood in my teeth and dust in my pores.

In a flash before me

ten thousand scenes of history

one last blow to end the pain

of a world that’s gone insane
